Happy Birthday Chris!

December 7th, 2003

Chris is 28 today! Happy Birthday Chris!

I spent the morning doing all the dishes and getting the house put back in order. All in all, it wasn't that bad and didn't take very long.

We went out to supper tonight with my in-laws and brother-in-law as a sort of joint birthday thing. I didn't know what I wanted to eat so I picked fish and chips which was quite adequate but it wasn't what I was really craving (however, I have no idea what that would have been). After supper, we went back to my in-laws' place to see the new kitten. They have rescued the sweetest little stray grey and black blotched tabby from a welding shop. It looks like a British shorthair. Unfortunately she is very foot-shy and somewhat feral. She desperately wants love and affection but she is very skittish and won't come to you. Chris got her to come out and come fairly close by flicking a ball on a shoelace at her. She'd forget about us and run out of hiding to play, but the instant one of us shifted slightly she was back under the dresser hiding.

I decided to see if I could get her to come out so I used the Sure Thing. This worked on Rollie and pretty much any cat I have met so far. I got a shrimp from my mother-in-law's supper (with permission of course!) and sat on the carpet and coaxed Moe (their other cat) over and started feeding him tidbits. Not two seconds had passed before Curly's little head shot up, nose twitching. She followed the scent pools around the room, going from safe place to safe place. I managed to coax her over under the dresser and she took a couple pieces from my fingers. I then started to draw her out by holding the pieces farther and farther away from her hiding spot. She came out! She was still very nervous, but I am sure a few more sessions like that and she will be much less skittish. She did bite my finger a little when she mistook it for shrimp. I have forgotten how sharp kitten teeth are.
