First day.
August 18th, 2003
Chris decided to ride with me up to Trent this morning, which was kind of nice. He is still lucky that he has this week off though. I had a hard time getting ready quickly this morning. I felt out of it and things took longer than I thought they should!
I walked in the building this morning for my first day of work, only to find that no one was there. The main secretary is on holiday until tomorrow, my supervisor didn't come in from Toronto, and the Chair of the department is on holiday this week. I ran into the Chair this morning because she had popped in today to clean her desk. She kindly let me in to my new office.
So I spent 2 hours in the morning moving furniture in my office to make myself a work area and I scraped the crap out of my leg, smashed my fingers and got out a lot of frustrations. The "desks" in this room are either tables with adjustable legs where the screws are busted, making them lean drunkenly, plywood tables with open ripping splinters on the edges, or dirty gouged desk like things with shelves where you would put your leg so you can't sit in them. I have one propped up with a wodge of paper under one leg and a chunk of wood under the other. Claaaaaassy! There is a funky 70s vinyl couch though. I made my workspace take the window and the computer hookup area, in a sort of L shape, with the couch backing onto the window making the L a U. I figure when I have students coming to see me they can sit beside me there on the couch.
The other two table desk things I tried to tuck into two corners so the people would have a semi provate space where someone isn't staring right at them.
I have no keys to get in to my office, no computer, no info, nothing. So I went home at 1pm. Thanks for coming out! I hope tomorrow is better. At the very least, I should bring all my research in and work on my article!
Books I have Read Lately:
- The Druid of Shannara by Terry Brooks. I remembered tiny bits of this book, but all in all I didn't remember much at all, so it was pretty new to me. Again, with the three main quests, the book gets a little disjointed, with rapid switching between people interspersed with long stretches with the same group of people. It wasn't very balanced, with Wren's quest dropping to almost nothing, and this book focussing mainly on Walker Boh's quest for the Black Elfstone. The third book is called the Elf-Queen though, so I am sure that one will focus more on Wren's quest. Fairly standard Brooks-type fantasy.
