Well.

June 12th 2005

This hasn’t been the best week ever.

I think I will divide it into Good, Bad, and Ugly.

The Good.

  • My wisdom tooth extraction seems to have gone really well. Chris took the day off work to take me in and back home, since I wasn’t supposed to drive for 24 hours after the anesthetic. I was a little nervous going in, mainly because I have never had dental surgery at all, not even cavities filled. So I really didn’t know what to expect. The nurse was nice though, and she put in an IV with no problems – I think she thought I was going to freak out at the needle or something. The last thing I remember is the dentist coming in and putting something into the IV and saying “this will make you mellow”.

Then I woke up. When I woke up I had IV holes in both hands, so I have no idea what happened there. The two top teeth are sockets now, and the two bottom ones have sutures. I faithfully took my T3s until they made me sick on the first day, and I can’t say as though they really did anything, so I don’t think I have had much pain at all. Dull ache from time to time but that is it. I do have a pretty high pain tolerance though, so that is probably it. It does all go back to scale and frame of reference.

I wasn’t expecting the freezing…I have never had that before and it was bizarre. I kept poking my face and chin just to feel that disturbing mushy sensation. Chris made me eggs and pudding and Jell-o, which I faithfully ate until Thursday, when I couldn’t stand it any more and had some real food. It made my teeth hurt, but it was worth it. So now, on Sunday I am feeling pretty good. The sutures haven’t dissolved yet, but everything seems to be healing fine. A bruise on the right side of my face just came up last night, but I haven’t had any significant swelling, probably because of my obsessive icing strategy.

  • I put in a birdbath and a niger feeder and my yard is full of birds now. It’s wonderful. I didn’t realise how much I missed that.
  • I almost have the foyer painted. I just need one more coat on the door and then I can lay the tiles. I will be so happy when this project is finished. It’s taken me so much longer due to the surgery, and Chris wrecking his ankle (see below).

The Bad.

  • The ankle. Yes it is that colour.Wednesday night, our rec league ball team had a game scheduled. I of course wasn’t going to play, but I went to watch. We were losing, but still in it, and around the 6th inning Chris ran for home and totally fucked up his left ankle. It immediately went the size of an orange on the outside. Then we had a problem because I didn’t have my wallet, and he drove the truck which is standard and I can’t drive it well enough yet. So I called his parents on the cellphone, and they came up. Steve took the truck back to their place, and Peggy drove Chris and I to the hospital, waited with us for a while and then went home when we told her that we could wait and would take a cab home.

Emerg sucked as usual, we were there for about 3.5 hours all told which is pretty fast considering it was packed. There were a lot of people there who shouldn’t have been there, for things like sprained fingers with no swelling and someone who “hurt their ankle” and yet was walking on it no problem. Chris was stuck on a stupid wheelchair that looked like a shopping cart, complete with basket and metal grille, and cost a loonie to disengage from the rest of the others.

Verdict was that it didn’t seem to be broken, but they put a crappy tensor on him and sent him home. The next day it looked like the photo. It swelled up over the entire foot and turned dark purple in places. A friend luckily had an aircast, so Chris has been using that, because the crutches are frustrating him so much. He went to work on Thursday and Friday. He doesn’t know when to stop. It is still giving him a lot of pain, so I hope he will make an appointment with the doctor and see if it is broken or get better instructions on what to do.

The Ugly.

  • Chris is on vacation this week, and we were supposed to finish the drywalling in the basement.
  • We haven’t had proper rain in over a month, and all my plants are dying.
  • S****bank sucks and I hit the final straw with them trying to organise funds for Greece that I think we are going to switch everything to another bank.
  • If we get the nod, I am leaving in less than a week for a month working on that project in Greece, and I haven’t finished packing.
  • Me. My clothes aren’t fitting properly. I guess not exercising and eating whatever I want for a month isn’t the best strategy?
