Book: Diplomatic Immunity

January 25th 2005

Diplomatic Immunity by Lois McMaster Bujold. 384 pages.

I got this one a while ago, around the time I was reading A Civil Campaign. For some reason, I couldn’t get right into it at the start, so it got put into my to-read pile, waiting for the right time. Apparently now was the right time to read it.

It’s quite different in tone from the first few books in the series. In fact, I would almost say that Miles is a completely different character given the same name. Is it because he’s grown up? I don’t know. There is even a lot of difference beween the last one and this one, which was kind of jarring. Perhaps Bujold is putting this series to bed for a while after this one. She seems to be focusing more on her Chalion series of late.

Ekaterin is a great character, and I am glad she has more to do in this book. Overall, it was enjoyable, but the tone issues did colour my perception of the book. There were some brilliantly funny Miles moments, and those made the book worthwhile to read.
