Book: Joust

Joust, by Mercedes Lackey. 448 pages.

I swore to myself I wouldn’t get sucked back into Mercedes Lackey’s books, but here I am again. This is a new series and a new world for her. At first glance, I thought this book was going to be much like Jane Yolen’s series (Heart’s Blood etc., but it is different enough to still be interesting.

One thing that caused much eye-rolling on my part was the gloss of Egyptian over everything. I thought she did an excellent job of explaining and talking about those cultures, but calling them the Tian was kind of lame, and having lotus flowers be latas flowers etc. etc.

So, overall, a good cotton-candy-for-the-brain type book, with a few twists, and some good characterisations.
