Return of the King.
December 18th 2004
I just finished a 12 and a bit hour marathon of watching all three Lord of the Rings extended editions back to back. Here is a brief summary of the evening, with a nod to last weekend’s Toronto Star, which had a hilarious article (mild spoilers on extended content if you haven’t seen the movie yet, so be warned).
It was a very fun afternoon/evening, and I am glad I did it, but my eyes feel like they are going to fall out of my head now. Who knew that sitting and staring at a TV for so long is so exhausting. I did enjoy seeing them back to back though – some connections between the films really jump out because they are much more fresh in the mind, which is cool. We enjoyed the extended edition of Return of the King a lot, most of the extra scenes and extended sequences were perfect and made it a much richer movie.
Right when Aragorn releases the dead from their vow, the DVD player overheated, causing the screen to dissolve into a mess of swirling pixels. Noooooooooooooo!!!! The rest of the movie we watched on one of the computers. I tell you, it doesn’t have the same impact and it was that much harder to stay awake. We are positive that they edited the jumping on the bed scene to be shorter, but we can’t remember what the theatrical was like, so maybe we were in error. Or just delirious. It’s quite possible, you know.
