Book: Son of Avonar

Son of Avonar, by Carol Berg.

I have read one other of Berg’s books, and thought it good enough to see what else she has to offer. This is a new series, set in a different world than any of her other books.

Seri, the main character is a Leiran noblewoman who has been exiled and punished after choosing to love a mage. Magic is prohibited in the Four Realms, with a fanaticism that results in public burnings of any mage unfortunate enough to be caught. Seri’s husband, a mage was killed, along with the child she was carrying.

Seri’s life of exile is shattered one day when she encounters a mute, fugitive fighter who is being chased by Leiran soldiers. Against her better judgement she takes him in and tries to help him, only to discover he is more than he seems.

Berg’s characters undergo horrible trials and tribulations before they are allowed to reach their answers. There were several plot twists, one I guessed before the end, but the true nature of it was unexpected. This ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I am anxious to read the next book.
