Fire Logic, by Laurie J. Marks.
I picked this book up on a whim because this was a new author, there seemed to be a good mix of characters, and I was intrigued by the first few pages I read in the store.
This book I believe is the first of 4 books, detailing the fall and recovery of an empire. Certain individuals are born with elemental magical talents, they are fire bloods, earth bloods, air bloods, and water bloods. The kingdom of Shaftal is ruled by an earth elemental, but he is killed, and everything is overturned.
The book was fairly well written, the characters were engaging and the plot flowed smoothly. There are lots of strong female characters, but I must say a lot of them are interchangeable and took a little time to become fixed in my head.
The description of the different cultures was really interesting, and I am looking foward to the next books in the series, if only to see if some of my suspicions regarding characters pan out.
