Garden update

June 2nd 2004

I managed to get a photograph of the rain and hail yesterday. As the street flooded with muck from the construction site up the hill, I was tickled by the sight of a regatta of Tim Hortons cups bobbing down on their way to the storm drain. You can see some hail on the edge of the driveway as well.

This next part will be boring if you don’t like gardening, so you might want to just ignore it if that isn’t your thing. I spent most of today in the garden. I did a lot of weeding, I had about 10 wild carrot plants secreted around the front bed that had to be dug out. In the back bed I moved a lot of plants around in the back garden and planted some fancy columbines and other perennials.

My big task was to dig an extension to a bed that I started last year beside the fence on the left hand side of the yard. I dug another 5 feet or so, which is good for me because I hate digging sod with a passion. This is kind of ironic as I am still a quasi-archaeologist, but once the sod is off, I don’t mind digging at all, so it’s just a fleeting idiosyncrasy I suppose. I actually got frustrated half-way through and ended up just chopping it into bits instead of peeling back nice even turves like I started to do. These I piled upside-down around some other beds that I am planning on expanding, so my foresight will mean no sod to remove when I get to that phase of expansion. In the bed extension I planted three varieties of hosta, and some Siberian iris transplants. It should look really good next year.

I am planning gardens all around the perimetre of the back yard once we put our fence in, but I will stake newspapers and mulch down in the fall so that in the spring I won’t have to go through all this part again.

The first of my Siberian irises in the front bloomed today. I was hoping one would open yesterday for my birthday, but one day late isn’t too bad. Back home in Almonte, it would be the lilacs opening now. Peterborough a bit more south and moderate, so is about 2 weeks ahead of Almonte in terms of plants so no lilacs for me now.

I found some photos from last year when I was so proud of my gardens and they look SO much better now. Heh.
