The Backstory

May 27th 2004 10:06 am

Here is a little capsule summary to give you the high points of the things I might be writing about. (Updated August 2nd, 2005)

Kate and Rollie, May 2004I’ve been writing on the web in one form or another since July 1998. I used to be known as Ceit, because I was rather leery of having my real name out there on the Internet, and it was the age of mysterious pseudonyms, what can I say. I am Kate. Ceit is Kate with a weird spelling, but it was enough at that time. I am not nearly this pretentious in real life.

Weener and Kate, 1979I am 28 years old (as of June 1st) and I am left-handed. I have a twin sister named Weener (As a digression, her name is Kristina, but I think I have called her that maybe twice in the past year. She used to hate her nickname, but I use it exclusively now, and she calls me Katie in return, so a fair trade), who is 28 years old minus ten minutes. The only time she got to have her birthday before mine was when she was in England. We live in Peterborough, Ontario.

I got here in 1996, when I began studying at Trent University for my B.Sc. and have never really left. I guess I have become that thing despised by all the cool kids at Trent. I am a Townie (gasp). Weener came two Mays ago after some adventures in Ottawa and England. She’s carving out a little life for herself here, and we try and get together fairly often. I think she is planning on moving to Toronto in the near future.

My mother lives near Ottawa, Ontario, in the small town where we grew up. My dad has lived in various places since 1996, including a stint in Rotterdam, Holland. For the past 7 years or so, he has lived in Bogota, Colombia.

My brother, Kevin, sister-in-law Christine, and nephews Devin and Kurtis live in Chesley, Ontario, next door to my maternal grandparents. My Grandma is now 92 years old, and my Grandpa is 90. I used to spend summers up there when I was little but I don’t get to see them all that often any more. I miss them all a lot and I always try to get up there for a long visit in the summer. Thank goodness for the academic year. Summers off rule!

An illustrious moment in my varsity fencing career.I got married on June 16th, 2001 to Chris, who I met when we were both attending Trent University. I met him on the fencing team. My in-laws and brother-in-law live just across town, so we see them quite often. Chris was born in Peterborough, but spent his formative years in Lakeway, Texas. He never learned how to play hockey, which up here makes one a freak, and he can put on a wicked drawl when he is so minded.

I got a Master’s in Bioarchaeology from UWO in 2003 and am currently trying to get my thesis written up into a couple of journal articles. I am currently a Teaching Assistant at Trent and am trying to decide if I want to go and get a Ph.D.

We bought a house in 2001, and have been steadily fixing it up ever since, including finishing most of the basement, putting in a bathroom in the basement, and lots of gardening. New in Summer 2005 is a complete kitchen remodel, and we are finally mudding the drywall in the two new basement rooms.

We have several creatures sharing the house with us:

Tia, May 2004Tia (Hypatia) (b. 1997) is a small, neat brown tabby with black feet and greeny-yellow eyes who is smart, but rather neurotic, but very, very pretty. Everyone remarks on how pretty she is. She has toy cats that she carries around by the scruff of the neck while she meows. You have to touch her throat to see if she is purring. Her nicknames are: Brown, Brown-Brown, Miss Brown, Purr-Purr.

Rollie, May 2004Rollie (Roland) (b. 1999) is a large orange and white cat with copper eyes. He would like you to know that he is the prettiest, but he is rather dumb, clumsy, and is prone to panic when he doesn’t understand what is going on (which is 99% of the time). However, he is very sweet and his nicknames are: Rolls, Buddy, Buds, Kitty-boy, Mr. Poo.

The Fish (b. 2000) Tese were 4 fish that lived in a tank in the laundry room in the basement while I tried to figure out where to put them. There was one big plecostomus (The Pleco), and three angel fish. One of the angelfish used to beat the crap out of the other ones all the time. RIP Mr. Cranky. Another one died around Christmas. So it’s just The Pleco and one angel fish now.
